A. Orval
Hankey
d. Jul 3, 2018
Emmetsburg
Asa Orval Hankey, son of Asa O. and Gladys M. (Hastings) Hankey, was born August 15, 1933, on the family farm near Osgood, Iowa. He attended grade school in Osgood and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1953.
On April 14, 1955, Orval was united in marriage to Beverly J. Wise in Emmetsburg, Iowa. To this union a son and daughter were born.
Orval enlisted in the United States Army in January 1955, doing his basic training at Fort Bliss in El Paso. Upon completion of his training, December 7, 1955, Orval boarded a ship at Brooklyn Naval Yard traveling overseas where he was stationed in Germany at Wiesbaden Air Base, which was a secret air base during the war. While in Germany, Orval served as headquarters message center clerk. Orval was honorably discharged in January 1957.
After returning to Emmetsburg, Orval was employed at Hite Motor Service where he worked until 1960. He then served as a policeman for the City of Emmetsburg. Orval owned and operated Orval's 66 Gas Station for five years before attending ILCC to learn welding and mechanics. Orval also worked for Durnell Engineering and was employed as a plumber until his retirement.
Orval was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church, the Emmetsburg Fire Department and Masonic Lodge.
Orval loved fishing and hunting in his younger years and he still enjoyed fishing off of Brian's dock, catching and releasing the fish. He liked to "tinker" in his garage and always looked forward to attending the Clay County Fair with Bev. For the last eight and a half years Orval gained a whole new group of friends at the Warner Dialysis Unit, the Spencer Municipal Hospital, and the valet staff at the hospital due to his treatment at these facilities. He thought the world of all of them.
Orval passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at the Emmetsburg Care Center, at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his parents, Asa and Gladys; brothers, Henry and Laurence Hankey; sister, Ruth Wikert; and nephew Dan Wikert.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly of Emmetsburg, Iowa; his children, Roger (Darlene) Hankey of Emmetsburg, Iowa and Lisa Hankey and her fiance, Guy Determann of Ankeny, Iowa; grandchildren, Eric Hankey of Humboldt, Iowa, Emily (Cody) DeWall of Pocahontas, Iowa, Jasmine and NiColett Boblit of Emmetsburg, Iowa; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; as well as many friends.
