Albert Paul Finnegan, son of George and Ruth Finnegan, was born July 17, 1941 in Silver Lake Township, near Ruthven, Iowa. He received his education at the Ruthven Community School, graduating from Ruthven High School in 1960. Al served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, from 1963 until 1965 when he was honorably discharged. Twenty three days before his discharge, Al was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart, as well as the Bronze Star.
After returning to the Ruthven area, Al worked for Finnegan DX service station. He joined his brother Tom in partnership in the station in 1971 and they worked together until 1973 when Al bought Tom out. Al owned and operated the station for fifty years, retiring in 2007.
On February 12, 1971 Al was united in marriage to Cecelia B. Hughes at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Graettinger, Iowa. To this union four sons were born.
Al was a devoted and faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, rarely missing a Mass. The church was very important to Al and he instilled this in his sons as well. Al was a member of American Legion Post #33 in Ruthven and enjoyed having the opportunity to be a part of one of the Honor Flights to Washington D.C.
Al was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He loved attending sporting events that his boys played in and also liked to get on the golf course to play a round or two with his friends. Al was also always ready for a game of cards, especially Cribbage.
Al passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa where he had recently moved, due to health issues. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Cecelia; brothers and sisters and their spouses, Philip Finnegan in infancy, Tom (Alice) Finnegan, (Ellie Finnegan), (Doris Finnegan), (Margie Finnegan), (Sis Finnegan), Ken Finnegan, Jim Finnegan, Dan Finnegan, and (Jane Finnegan).
He is survived by four sons, Tim Finnegan of Schaller, Iowa, Bill (Amy) Finnegan of West Des Moines, Iowa, Dan Finnegan of Des Moines, Iowa and Nolan (Amy Jo) Finnegan of West Des Moines, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Sierra, Braden, Ryan, Cecelia, Ellie, Shane and Jon; brothers and sisters, Robert Finnegan of Ruthven, Iowa, Pat Finnegan of Muskegon, Michigan, Dave Finnegan of St. James, Minnesota, Mike Finnegan of Iowa City, Iowa, Roger (Darlene) Finnegan of Eldridge, Iowa, Raymond (Patricia) Finnegan of Omaha, Nebraska, Dennis Finnegan of Omaha, Nebraska, Mary (Edwin) Smith of Greene, Iowa, RoseAnne (Max) Girres of Grundy Center, Iowa and Frances (Dennis) Anderson of Bellevue, Nebraska; sisters-in-law, Nancy Finnegan of Omaha, Nebraska and Jan Finnegan of Storm Lake, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends
