Arlene graduated from Lake Center High School, Ruthven, IA, in 1944, and married Russell the following year. They lived on various farms in NW Iowa and at Rural Route Terril, until 1962, when they moved to Boone, IA, for 10 years. After that time the doctors told Russ that he needed to move to Arizona for health reasons, so they moved to Glendale, AZ until 1989, at which time they moved back to State Center to be near family. Arlene was caregiver to Russ for a year following his heart attack until his passing on June 26, 1992, and to her mother Mabel Hanson Smith for 20 years till her passing in May, 2013, at the age of 103.
After Russ' death, Arlene moved to Spencer, where she cared for her mother for the next 20 years and resided until the time of her death.
In her years of raising her family, Arlene always had a large garden and canned its produce. She was an excellent cook and also enjoyed crocheting. She worked outside the home at Berkley's in Spencer, Woolworth's in Boone, and Furr's Cafeteria in Phoenix.
