Arne Theodore Hanson was born on the family farm southeast of Ruthven on October 25, 1921 to Clarence B. and Elsie (Nelson) Hanson. Due to illness the family moved to Estherville in 1925. Arne attended school there through the 11th grade. The family moved back to the family farm in 1940 and he graduated from Ruthven High School in 1941.

He was called to active duty in the United States Coast Guard in 1942. He served on anti-submarine patrols in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans until his honorable discharge in 1946. Arne attended Iowa State University until 1949 when he returned to Ruthven to begin farming. He married Cheryl Bressler on June 15, 1952 at Zion Lutheran Church and they raised their four children, Candace, Arne John, Patricia and Timothy. Cheryl passed away in 1974. Arne received the Century Farm Award at the Iowa State Fair in 1982. He retired from farming in 1990.

Arne was a devoted lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ruthven, where he served as trustee. He loved to work at the Clay County Fair each year, and did so for over twenty years.

Arne met Ramona Dennis in Tucson, Arizona and they were married on July 18, 1987 in Ruthven. They spent their winters in Tucson for twenty four years. They also enjoyed a three week trip to Norway in 1999. Ramona passed away in 2014.

In 2011, Arne went on the Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. He cherished the time he spent with his family and was very proud of all of them.

Arne passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at the Ruthven Community Care Center at the age of 94. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Erling, Herbert and Ellsworth, and both wives.

He is survived by his children: Candace (Mike) White of Dickens, Iowa, Arne John (Stacy) Hanson of Garnett, Kansas, Patricia (Chuck) Foley of Lake Havasu City, Arizona and Timothy Hanson of Spencer, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Meredith (Nick) Martin, Megan White (Gabriel Imel), Michael White, Zach (Megan) Hanson, Drew Hanson, Alex Hanson, and Cory Hanson as well as Ramona's four daughters and their families. He will be greatly missed by his family and many, many friends.
