Robert Joseph McNally, son of Robert Francis and Violet Margaret (Berry) McNally, was born October 30, 1922 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He received his education at Emmetsburg Public School, graduating in 1941. Following graduation Bob worked for Firkins Trucking, driving truck in the area. Bob then enlisted in the United States Army in 1944, where he trained as a Sharp Shooter, serving until 1946.
After returning to Emmetsburg, Bob took a job with the Rural Electric Company (REC) as an equipment operator and line foreman.
On May 7, 1948 Bob was united in marriage to Beverly Jones at the Catholic Church Rectory in Emmetsburg, Iowa. To this union three children were born.
In 1950, Bob re-enlisted in the Army and served in the Occupation of Japan until his honorable discharge in 1951. After his discharge from the service, he returned to assume his job at REC. Bob worked for REC for thirty five and a half years, retiring in 1984.
Even though Bob was retired, he wasn't a guy to just relax and sit around. During his retirement Bob worked for Ken Krause Motors, picking up and delivering cars to the dealership. He also worked for the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in countless capacities. He was also employed by MaxYield/Terra, again helping in countless ways.
Bob was a faithful and devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Emmetsburg Fire Department. While an active fire fighter, Bob served as Fire Chief as well as many other position in the department. Rarely did Bob miss a Monday night card game at the fire station. He will be remembered for all of the tickets he sold for the department's Feather Party each year. Bob was an active member and supporter of AA.
Bob enjoyed walking and caring for his grandchildren and great grandchildren with Bev. He also loved driving, making sure that the route was mapped out prior to leaving. He also made sure his family knew where his family was to go if they were taking a trip. Bob was talented at wiring and fixing things. Bob also enjoyed gardening, making sure each of the kids spent a half hour weeding, beginning promptly at 5:00 p.m. He will also be remembered by many for his "signature lunches" (bologna sandwich, an apple, a cookie and some red Kool-Aid).
Bob passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Beverly; his sister, Kathryn Heng; and a brother, Earl "Mac" McNally.
He is survived by his children, Nancy (Steve) Gibson of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Jean (Roger) Maaland of Emmetsburg, Iowa and Bob McNally of Stanhope, Iowa; five grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; as well as many other relatives and friends.
