Written by Carl prior to his death....
In order to share my thoughts with some maximum accuracy, I thought it best to tell my own life's story. I have had a good life. My Lord and Savior has watched over me and blessed me and taken care of me, and I give thanks to Him for that.
I was born January 10, 1928 on a farm one mile south and the first place west of Curlew. I was the son of John and Elsie (Clausen) Heldt. I had two brothers, Arnold and Herman, and a sister, Anna. I lived on this farm twelve years before we had electricity. We had no inside plumbing - I used the outhouse for eighteen years. In 1945 I graduated from the Curlew High School with four people being in my class. In 1946, my parents purchased the Otto Lund Farm and we moved there to live. After graduating, I worked as a hired man on a farm and I worked on a construction crew. Then Ted Larson and I ran the Conoco Gas Station in Mallard. There was always a lot of action taking place there!
In 1950 I was drafted into the Army. I spent a year in Korea with Company F. 15th Regiment, 3rd Division. I was discharged in 1952 as a Sergeant. After coming home, I went to work at International Harvester in Laurens.
One Sunday morning while attending Trinity Lutheran Church in Mallard, I met Margaret Wells, a Mallard school teacher, on the steps of the church. I invited her for a ride in my new Chevy car and that was the beginning of a special relationship. We were married on July 12, 1953 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pomeroy. We lived and raised our five children, (Peggy, Steven, Carol, Angela and Brian) on the Heldt Farm. In 1989, I retired and we moved to a house in Mallard that we had built for us. We belonged to the Fellowship Club at our church. Each summer, we spent a week at Camp Okoboji with our family. There were many family activities that took place there. We made some long-lasting friends.
I took many fishing trips with my five friends to Canada. We would fish all day. When we came in, some would clean the fish, but I was always the cook. We played cards in the evening. What a great time of fellowship we always had!
I enjoyed the twelve years that I spent on the Board of Directors for the West Bend Elevator Company and the twelve years as Mayor of Mallard. I felt very honored and privileged to serve on each of them.
On March 2, 2002 my wife, Margaret passed away with cancer. On March 20, 2004, I married LaVonne Shaveland Foster at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mallard.
Carl passed away Friday, August 20, 2021 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, at the age of 93. He is survived by his wife, LaVonne Heldt; his children, Peggy (Joe) Kenyon, Steve Heldt, Carol (Brian) Mugge, Angela (Russ) Naeve, and Brian Heldt; seventeen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Arlene Heldt; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elsie; his first wife, Margaret; brothers, Arnold and Herman; sister, Anna Hillmer; and brother-in-law, Stanley Hillmer.
