Charles Henry Thiel, son of Henry and Anastasia (Nolan) Thiel, was born February 18, 1938 on the family farm near Graettinger, Iowa. He began his education in Country School Hoprig #8 where he completed 8th grade. Chuck, as he became known to his family and friends, continued his education in Ringsted graduating from Ringsted High School in 1955.
Chuck farmed in the area and had livestock which included cattle, hogs and chickens. He referred to his livestock as his "Rainbow Herd" due to the fact he liked to have all types of cattle. He enjoyed going to the Sioux City Stockyards. Chuck loved growing and sharing sweetcorn with his friends and neighbors, especially the Horizon's Unlimited clients.
Chuck was united in marriage to Patricia Emmons on August 3, 1974 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Graettinger, Iowa. They were blessed with a son.
Chuck was a devoted and faithful member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He volunteered by moving snow for the church and rarely missed going to Mass.
When Chuck was younger he enjoyed snowmobiling. He frequently attended the auto races at Jackson, Fairmont and Knoxville. He also enjoyed going to the Spencer Fair. Soil conservation was important to Chuck and he was awarded for the work he did. He had built terraces and planted over 170 trees. He made sure his farm yard was mowed and trimmed to perfection as the farm was recognized as a Century Farm in 2015 with three generations of family farmers. Chuck loved his family very much and was proud of the fact that his son is now the fourth generation farmer on the family farm.
Chuck passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg, Iowa, at the age of 82. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Regina Thomsen, Joleen Petersen, and Theresa Kay Thiel; and a brother-in-law, Lawrence Thomsen.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia of Graettinger, Iowa; his son, Charlie Thiel, II of Graettinger, Iowa; brother-in-law, Lloyd Petersen of Graettinger, Iowa; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
