Colleen Isabell (Darling) Peterson, the daughter of Otis and Bertha (Gile) Darling was born December 18, 1926 in Cylinder, Iowa. She grew up in the Emmetsburg area and attended school at Great Oak country school and in Emmetsburg.
After being introduced to Lawrence Peterson in the doorway of the Ayrshire gym at a basketball game, the couple wed on August 29, 1947 and settled in the Ayrshire countryside. Early in her life, Colleen worked as a telephone switch operator and at JC Penney but made her life on the farm with Lawrence.
She was passionate about the outdoors; whether in the field or chicken houses, afternoons in her flower beds, or mowing her acreage at 90 years old. When not outside, she explored her creative side through crocheting, cross-stitching, and quilting.
Family and friends meant the world to Colleen. Having two sons, Gary and Steve, she treasured being a mother and grandmother. She also embraced the Ayrshire community and her friends and neighbors always kept her engaged and vivacious.
Colleen held fast to living on the farm until the last week of her life. She passed away with peace and grace Monday, April 9, 2018 at the Emmetsburg Care Center surrounded by loved ones. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; and her sister, Aloah Carpenter.
She is survived by her children, Gary and Marci Peterson of Phoenix, AZ and Steve Peterson and Robin Allen of Ayrshire, IA; five grandchildren, Ryan (Amy), Thor (Sarah), Meredith (Tim), Kyler, and Tessa; six great grandchildren, Bainbridge, Lola, Morgan, Cameron, Opal, and Esther; several nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
Colleen touched the lives of those she knew and will be remembered and loved…
