Colton Douglas Johnson was born June 22, 2000 to Mark and Valerie (Iwen) Johnson in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He received his education at Emmetsburg Community School and graduated in 2018. While in school, Colton was active in band, music and art. He received many special recognitions for his talents, some of which included a Division II Performance IHSMA State Solo, the Louis Armstrong Award, Jazz Award, Division I Performance IHSMA State Solo/Small Ensemble Festival and a Division I Performance IHSMA Solo.
While growing up he was in Boy Scouts. Colton enjoyed participating in plays in high school and at Mainstreet Community Theatre. Colton also played in the Municipal Summer Band.
Following high school Colton attended Iowa State University where he studied Political Science. After returning to Emmetsburg, Colton was employed at Wild Rose Casino, where he was currently working.
Colton was a great friend to many. He loved being with his friends and family hosting countless bonfires at his home where the yard would be filled with people. His friends always knew he would be their driver if needed. Colton was very artistic and accepted people for who they were and what they stood for. He believed with all his heart that everyone is equal and that he wanted to make the world a better place. He supported the Green Movement and was a member of the LGBTQ Organization in Ames. Colton's kind heart wasn't just for people but for animals as well. He had dogs, birds and even a frog he rescued for the winter.
Colton passed away Saturday, June 22, 2019, at the age of 19. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Sylvia and Vernon Iwen and Wilford Johnson.
He is survived by his parents, Mark and Val Johnson of Emmetsburg, Iowa; his sister, Jasmine Johnson of Spirit Lake, Iowa; grandparents, Corinne and Roger Olson of Zearing, Iowa; aunts and uncles, Bruce (Cindy) Iwen of Cylinder, Iowa, Craig (Sandi) Iwen of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Cindy Baker (Tim Hansen) of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Kimberly (Jeff) King of Buckeye, Arizona, Wendy (Bill) Hawks of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Shawna (Brad) Anderson of Graettinger, Iowa, Rick (Shere) Johnson of Ocoee, Florida and Kirk (Mary) Johnson of Lone Rock, Iowa; his cousins; as well as many other relatives and friends.
