Darrell Dean McGranahan was born February 14, 1927 to Leonard Merl and Evangeline (Holmgren) McGranahan in Ruthven Iowa. His early years were spent on the farm east of Ruthven. He attended country schools and Ruthven Community High School, graduating in 1944. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army (at age 17) and served in Europe. On June 23, 1947, Dean married Leah Mae Roland in Jackson, Minnesota. Two children were born to this union—LeAnn McGranahan and Allen McGranahan.

Dean and Leah started their married life in LeMars, Iowa where he was employed by the Surge Milking Machine Co. Later they returned to the Ruthven area, working for Harold Roland until purchasing the farm south of Lake Center in 1955. Here Dean farmed, raised feeder cattle and hogs and bred and sold Appaloosa horses. The horses were shown and sold nation- wide and won many awards.

Dean was an avid trapshooter and participated across the mid-west and west. Dean was an accomplished bowler and was a member of several teams from Spencer over the years.

Dean and Leah enjoyed wintering in Arizona for a number of years where he participated in trapshooting competition and golf.
After retiring from farming, Dean and Leah enjoyed many fun times with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren and took pleasure in watching them lead their lives and hearing of their adventures.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, brother Barry McGranahan, sister-in-law Fern McGranahan and an infant sister.

Dean is survived by his children: LeAnn McGranahan (George Veitch) of Papaaloa, Hawaii and Allen McGranahan (Cindy) of Dickens, his grandchildren Devan McGranahan (Meghan Kirkwood), Moorhead, Minnesota, Katrina Brown, Dickens and Ellyn Vogel (Travis), Rapid City, South Dakota and great-grandchildren Keith and Allison Brown and Grayson Vogel.
