Dennis Lee Norgaard was born March 7, 1954, in Rochester, Minnesota to Earl and Phyllis (Chapman) Norgaard. Dennis spent his early years in Spencer, Iowa, before moving to the Norgaard farm in Dickens, Iowa around the age of nine.
Dennis grew up messing around with cars, motorcycles, trucks, riding horses, and milking and herding cows. As he grew up, the family farm turned to custom windrowing, baling hay, trucking, and later added the sand and gravel business. Dennis graduated from South Clay in the class of 1972.
On June 1, 1974, Dennis was united in marriage to Marleen Ball at the United Methodist Church in Webb, Iowa. They welcomed a daughter, LeAnne in 1975 and a son, Lonnie in 1977. Dennis was hard working and dedicated to his family and worked no matter the task. He loved to talk with people and always went out of his way to be friendly and kind to everyone he met.
Dennis was a 4-H leader, Volunteer Fireman, Town Council Member, and later the Mayor of Dickens where he helped to build the current fire station, community center, and remodel the library. Dennis was very proud of establishing DL Trucking, hauling seed and grain for many years. Dennis cherished his time helping Bill and Roy Koenig with spring planting and fall harvest for 23 years.
Throughout the years, Dennis also loved the time he spent with his family celebrating Labor Day, Memorial Day and the 10 years he spent driving the family RAGBRAI bus. Retirement allowed Dennis to work at the west gate at the Clay County Fair for several years where he was able to continue with his love of talking to people.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hardie and Forest Ball; niece, Tara Rabel; brothers-in-law, Hardie Ball Jr., Chris Dyhrkopp, and Dennis Edwardson.
He is survived by his wife, Marleen Norgaard of Dickens, Iowa; daughter, LeAnne (Doug) Kruse of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; son, Lonnie (Jenny) Norgaard of Ankeny, Iowa; four granddaughters, Hunter (Josiah) Aberson, Madison Roberts, Kendra Norgaard, and Katelyn Norgaard; two great granddaughters, Everleigh Hanson and Halle Aberson; four brothers, Alan (Loralei) Norgaard, Peter (Rosemary) Norgaard, Bruce (Tammy) Norgaard, and David (Mary) Norgaard; two sisters, Sue (Terry) Rabel and Sheri (Don) Young; sisters-in-law, Barbara Davis, Sibyl (Gary) Ball, Mary (Larry) Mills, Gloria Ball, and Karleen (Bill) Koenig; brother-in-law, Cal (Em) Ball; as well as many other relatives and friends. Dennis was so many things to so many people that he will truly be missed by all.
