Deryll Alfred Brodersen, son of William and Goldie (Kemp) Brodersen was born on December 26, 1926, the second of three sons. He was raised on a farm south of Ayrshire and graduated in 1943 from the Silver Lake Community School. In 1949, he was united in marriage to Joyce Ilene Pomeroy in Jackson, MN. To this union, four children were born.
Deryll and Joyce made their home southeast of Ayrshire until 1980 when they moved to his parent's homestead where they continued to farm until he retired in 2002. Deryll was a dedicated and hardworking farmer who took a lot of pride in his farming operation.
He was known however, for having a strong aversion toward weeds and would let you know that keeping them out of his fields and his yard was a never-ending battle. Joyce will confirm that Deryll and "Mr. Roundup" became a little too friendly, and this duo was known to remove not just the weeds but some very beloved flowers and areas of their green, lush lawn!
Along with farming, Deryll worked at Mefford's Industry, and he also enjoyed doing carpentry work with Stan Clark Construction out of Laurens. In 1976, he utilized his workman's craft by building a cabin on Lost Island Lake where family, friends, and even strangers would gather. Everyone was welcome by both land and water to stop in at their blue cabin to chat, relax, eat, go for a leisurely ride in the pontoon, or take a spin on Deryll's green wave runner which he never seemed to lose sight of…just ask the grandkids about Grandpa's binoculars!
Deryll thoroughly enjoyed fishing for walleye and northern pike and made several trips to South Dakota with his fishing buddies. He also enjoyed trapping, deer, duck, fox, turtle, and goose hunting, as well as sharing fish tales and fun times with his buddies. Deryll was particularly known for getting a lot of mileage out of his pickup trucks and making several friends along the way. We soon found out that no matter where we would go, somebody knew Deryll! Some of his other favorite pastimes were arm wrestling - sometimes known as a force to be reckoned with - playing cards, golfing, watching Lawrence Welk, and woodworking. After retirement, if Deryll wasn't napping, watching sports, fishing or driving around in his pickup, one could find him in "Grandpa's Shop" building birdhouses, quilt racks, chests, benches, and other little wooden treasures he made for family and friends.
Deryll was also very active in the community. He was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Ayrshire where he served on the SPPRC, Administrative Council, and on the Board of Trustees. He also served on the Ayrshire Elevator Board, the Booth Township Trustees, and the Election Board.
Deryll dearly loved his family. He and Joyce were married for 67 years and they worked side by side on the family farm. He spent several years sharing farm operations with his oldest son Ron; discussing fishing, hunting, and politics with Randy; teaching Becky woodworking skills; competing with Shayne over who saw the first crow, "Crow, Shayne", "Crow, Dad", and often sharing whisker rubs. He soon experienced the joys and challenges of having grandchildren, and the fact that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree! Deryll was always a storyteller, and it was grandson Alex who inspired some of the most entertaining family tales. He loved all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with every one of them.
Deryll passed away on Friday, September 9, 2016, in Emmetsburg at the age of 89. But more importantly than Deryll passing away, Deryll passed our way, allowing us to know and love him, to remember and cherish his many stories, sometimes exaggerated, even questionable, frequently repeated, but always humorous and entertaining! He continued to humor us in the last moments of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Goldie Brodersen; brother Billy Brodersen; brother Norman Brodersen; his father and mother-in-law, George and Goldie Pomeroy; in-laws Lee and Arlene Pomeroy; Velma Winegarden, Clay Winegarden, Calvin Remillard, Glen and Jean Brodale; step grandson Tim Johnson, and nephew Dale Pomeroy.
