Dixie Kay Bendixen, daughter of Henry "Bud" and Opal (Hutchings) Argabright, was born February 5, 1944 on a farm northeast of Emmetsburg, Iowa. She received her education in country school before her family moved to a farm north of Cylinder, Iowa.
Dixie was united in marriage to Larry Bendixen on June 9, 1963. Throughout Larry's military career, Dixie had three children; Larry, Jr., who died in infancy, Vernewood, now of Eagleville, Missouri and Valerie Kay (Bill) DeMoss of Martinsville, Missouri. She loved raising her children, following wherever the military led them, making a house a home and then retiring in Mallard, Iowa. They all enjoyed camping and fishing together and being with others at family get-togethers. They moved to a farm east of Mallard to enjoy the chickens, a few calves and horse chores, planting trees and babysitting their first grandson, Michael Lee.
Dixie also enjoyed sewing and designing her own quilts to give to family and friends. She loved being outside whether it was raking leaves, tending to a garden, picking up sticks, painting or working on some project. She always said, "The dishes can wait, we've got work to do outside" or "Let's go sit on the porch and visit."
In 2001, Dixie moved to Missouri to help with Bill and Valerie's farm chores, raise her grandson, Keaton Henry and occasionally be on the road, exploring new places and keeping Keaton entertained along the way. In 2015, Dixie moved to the town of Eagleville. There she continued keeping busy with sewing projects and her quilting, going for hot fudge sundaes or cinnamon rolls with her friends and keeping Verne busy mowing or helping her with outside projects.
Dixie passed away Thursday, January 27, 2022 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, Iowa, at the age of 77. She was preceded in death by her first child, Larry Bendixen, Jr. in infancy; her mother and father, Henry "Bud" and Opal Argabright; brother, Marion Argabright; sister and brother-in-law, JoAnn and Charles Hon.
She is survived by her son, Verne Bendixen of Eagleville, Missouri; her daughter, Valerie (Bill) DeMoss of Martinsville, Missouri; two grandchildren, Michael Bendixen and Keaton DeMoss; one great grandchild, Novaleigh; her brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Rosie Argabright of Emmetsburg, Iowa; her sister, Viola Williams of Omaha, Nebraska; as well as many other relatives and friends.
"Her presence will be greatly missed, but we will always hold Her Spirit in our hearts."
