Donna Ailene (Johnson) Kunz was born in Elmore, Minnesota May 4, 1920, to Therman Allen Johnson and Bertha Belle (Warriner) Johnson. She was the second of six children. Her childhood alternated between Fairmont, Minnesota and Estherville, Iowa. She graduated from Fairmont High School in 1937.
Donna was joined in marriage to Donald A. Kunz on July 23, 1946. Twelve children were born to this union. They lived multiple places before settling in Ruthven, Iowa in 1953. Donna was active in raising her children and working in several "cafes" until they opened Don's Station and Store in 1971.
While her children were in school, Donna was President of the PTA and played 1st tube and funnel in the Band Mother's Kitchen Band. She served on the Title XX Advisory board for District III. Later she served on the Resident Council of Ruthven Community Care Center and Ruthven Cemetery Board into her 90s.
She enjoyed crocheting, reading and corresponding with her family. Donna moved to Storm Lake in 2015.
Donna is survived by eleven children, Beth (Chuck) Wyatt of George, Iowa, Norman (Joyce) Kunz of Charlotte, North Carolina, Augusta Jean Curry of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Peggy Queener of Estherville, Iowa, John (Barbara) Kunz of Lackawanna, New York, Mary McAllister of Chapel Hills, Ohio, Lois (Steven) Clark of Terril, Iowa, Rosa (John) Twait of Amarillo, Texas, Nancy (Frank) Alderton of Storm Lake, Iowa, Wendy Hays of Forestville, California, Ned (Edward) Kunz of Auburn, New York; as well as many, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, family and friends.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents and siblings; a son, Nick; grandsons, Brian and Paul; and granddaughters, Karen and Francis.
She lived. Gloriously, fully, with every fiber of her being. She sang, and danced and cried and yelled, regardless of who was watching. She was witty, talented and wise. She was quick to love, and to forgive. If you were with her, you were the favorite. If you were absent, she would mention how she missed you. Her smile and charm have brightened the day of more people than most of us could do in two lifetimes. And her incredible memory made everyone she encountered more than once feel they were important. She loved, and always had more to share. She influenced generations by being herself. She is survived by many, and celebrated by more. She is an example we should all try to emulate.
