Doris Swinton White was born January 16, 1919 to Fred and Hattie (Knutson) Swinton in Stanton, Minnesota, and was the third of fourteen children. Doris followed siblings Mildred and Harold and preceded Willard (Bill), Don, Dale, Herbert, Maurice, Wilma, Helen Mae, Vernon, Alfreeda, Lois, and Roger. They moved to a farm just north of Nashua, Iowa when Doris was three years old, and there they thrived as a family making a living from the rich farmland. She attended the nearby one room country school, as did all of her brothers and sisters, and graduated from Nashua High School in 1935.
Doris graduated in business and secretarial curriculums from gates Business College in Waterloo in 1937. While a student she met and later married fellow student Clare White on June 23, 1940 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They purchased their first home in Popejoy, Iowa where they lived and worked until WWII called Clare to service. Doris returned home to work as a Lumber Co. bookkeeper and help her mother with a gravely ill father.
After the war Doris and Clare moved to Royal, Iowa to manage several lumber yards and later to Emmetsburg where they raised three children David, Charles, and Susan while continuing work in the lumber business. In the 1960's Clare and Doris started a house building company called Valu Planned Homes which occupied them for many years until Clare became a realtor. Doris also worked as a lead secretary for Iowa Lakes Community College in the early 70's and then became the local RSVP Program Coordinator for a few years. In addition, she was a volunteer bookkeeper for the Palo Alto County Hospital auxiliary.
Due to failing health, at 91 years of age, Doris had to give up her beloved house and independence to become part of the Lakeside Lutheran Home family until her recent death.
Doris loved playing bridge with friends and any outdoor work. She was a smart and savvy investor and a meticulous record keeper. Her energy and concern for others was boundless and she loved her grandchildren most of all. Doris did not like cats or dogs, but she was kind to dogs.
Doris is survived by her sons; David (Christy), Emmetsburg, Ia., Chuck (Karla), Plymouth, Mn., four grandchildren; Ryan (Lisa) Joshua, Christopher and Thomas, one great-grandchild; Declan, two sisters; Helen Ascher of Clarksville, Ia. and Lois Brodt of Waverly, Ia.; two brothers; Maurice (Alice) Swinton, Dixson, Ill., and Roger (Marlys) Swinton, Shell Rock, Ia.; three sisters-in-law; Bernice Swinton (Harold), Waterloo, Ia., Dorothy Swinton (Don) and Donna Swinton (Vernon) of Waverly, Ia. and a brother-in-law; Ronald Albaugh (Alfreeda), Springfield, Mo. and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, of 62 years, her daughter, Susan, five brothers, three sisters, three brothers-in-law; Reyn Schultz (Mildred), Earl Brand (Wilma), and Harley Ascher (Helen Mae), three sisters-in-law; Mary Swinton (Dale), Dolores Swinton (Herbert) and Lois Swinton (Willard).
