Douglas Alfred Berger, son of Charles A. and Helen M. (Dyer) Berger, was born February 14, 1963 in Spring Valley, Minnesota.  After his family moved to Ayrshire, Doug began his education in Ayrshire Consolidated School, graduating in 1981.  He became known to his family and friends as Herm and this nickname remained with him throughout his life.

Following high school, Herm enlisted in the United States Air Force on June 1, 1981, and was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, where he trained in aircraft hydraulic systems.  He served with the 320th Bomber Wing at Mather Air Force Base in California until being honorably discharged in 1983.

On June 20, 1987 Herm was united in marriage to Jessica "Noke" Horst at Zion Lutheran Church in Ruthven, Iowa.  They were blessed with two daughters, Brittani and Brooke.

Herm was employed as a welder throughout his working years and was most recently employed at Godbersen Metal Works in Spencer.  He was a past member of the Ayrshire American Legion.

Herm loved becoming a grandpa, spoiling his grandchildren by stopping by and leaving them surprise after school snacks.  He always looked forward to picking asparagus in the spring and sharing it with others.  Herm enjoyed raising a garden each year and  baking apple crisp and banana bread for his family and friends.  He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and loved watching Nascar.  Herm often had conversations and sometimes heated discussions with Alexa.

Herm passed away Friday, November 3, 2023  at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg at the age of 60.  He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Helen Berger; brothers, Bob, Rich, Sam, and James; sisters, Lois in infancy, Marlene Knutson, Loretta Buchanan and Diane Hoben.

He is survived by his wife, Noke of Ruthven, Iowa; his daughters, Brittani Berger (Chad) of Spencer, Iowa and Brooke Berger (Matt) of Emmetsburg, Iowa; grandchildren, Adelynn, Ayden, and Laynee; brothers, Roland (Melody) Berger of Wathena, KS, Loren (Tammy) Berger of Paullina, Iowa, and Randy (Kim) Berger of Emmetsburg, Iowa; sisters, LaVonne (David) Eldridge of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Joan Hanson of Emmetsburg, Iowa and Janet (Shane) Noll of Emmetsburg, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Harriet Berger of Spencer, Iowa, Kathy Berger of Gillett Grove Iowa, and Kathy Berger of Ayrshire, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Pete Knutson of Pocahontas, Iowa and Brad Hoben of Sanford, Florida; his aunt, Genevieve Burger of Ruthven, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; as well as many great nieces and nephews; and countless friends.
