Ed Schettler, 85, of Ayrshire, Iowa, died Wednesday, October 31, 2018 in Emmetsburg after a lengthy illness. Born in Carrol County Iowa, Ed served in the Army, and was stationed in Korea following the end of the Korean Conflict.

Ed moved to Palo Alto County in 1964 to farm. During his farming career he continued to be a seed dealer, his father having founded Schettler Seeds in 1947.

His involvement in the seed business led to his position as President of the Iowa Soybean Association in 1977. He was also a director of the American Soybean Association in the 1980s and between 1983 and 1984 he was one of the Vice Presidents of the American Soybean Association.   For many years he held annual appreciation dinners for his customers that included slide show presentations of his travels to explore agricultural practices in places such as Mexico, Brazil and the Soviet Union. During the Carter administration he was part of a group visiting the White House to promote agriculture.

He embraced the growth of agriculture not only through the seed business, but was also a stockman. He was a charter member of the National Cattleman's Beef Association which was founded in 1996. He was also involved in the growth of the Black Maximizer breed of cattle.

After his farm, he loved hunting, and Montana. He first hunted in Montana in 1979. He ultimately bought property there and frequently visited his friends in the Grasshopper Valley. His involvement there included becoming one of four Non-Resident Directors of the Montana Wildlife Federation serving from 1986 to 1991. A conservationist as well as a sportsman, he proposed a resolution in 1998 to the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks called the "Habitat Protection" bill. He was a Pheasants Forever Sponsor, on the Ducks Unlimited Board of Directors and a Life Member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Clara; sisters, Donna, Irma, Irene, and brother Elmer. He is survived by his siblings Joan Danzer (Ed, deceased) of Carroll, Ruth Mescher (Paul) of Manning, and Mel Schettler (Barb) of West Des Moines and is also survived by his good friends Betty Janssen and Jim Kibbie and their families.
