Elizabeth (Szack) Flannegan, daughter of Adam and Elizabeth (Tewald) Szack, was born September 10, 1933 in Tofu, Hungary. She received her education in schools in Hungary. In 1947 Liz's family left their home and fled from the Communists seeking safety in a camp in Austria, where they remained for four years. In 1951, the Szack family moved to the United States, making their home in Spencer, Iowa where they were sponsored by the Methodist Church. While traveling from Austria to the United States, Liz scrubbed steps on the ship to help earn money for their arrival in a new country.

After moving to Spencer, Liz worked at Kon's Photography for several years and when the studio was purchased by Marvin Burke, she continued working for him.

Liz enjoyed attending dances at the Woodcliff, near Spencer, where she met Hugh Flannegan on St. Pat's evening. On October 29, 1955, they were united in marriage in Spencer, Iowa. They continued to enjoy attending dances in the area, and especially waltzing together. They were blessed with five children. In 1955, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, Liz was proud to receive her citizenship to the United States.

After making their home near Emmetsburg she helped Hugh with his excavating business, acquiring the nickname "Barracuda", due to her collection practices and her snowmobile riding. Liz served on the Palo Alto County Ambulance group and owned and operated a food booth at the Clay County Fair for thirty years.

She was a member of Holy Family Parish in Emmetsburg and the Moose Lodge in Spencer.

Liz loved her trips to Las Vegas, only missing one year from 1970 until 1999. She enjoyed playing cards and Bingo. She also liked bowling and gambling at various casinos. A highlight for Liz was traveling back to her homeland with her sister, Katharina.

Liz passed away Monday, April 15, 2019, at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, Iowa, at the age of 85. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hugh; two sons, Steven and Robert; a great granddaughter, Kaleigh; brother-in-law, Melvin Johnson; and sister-in-law, Patricia Reding.

She is survived by her children, Lisa Kobernusz of Boone, Iowa, John (Carol) Flannegan of Emmetsburg, Iowa, and Michael (Cindy) Flannegan of Emmetsburg, Iowa; grandchildren, Ben, Danielle, Adam, Luke, Katie, Elyssa Mae, Joannie, Carey Ann; several great grandchildren; her sister, Katharina Johnson of Spencer, Iowa; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mike and Marietta Flannegan and Mary and John Vorlicek; nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.
