Ellen M. Saxton, daughter of Ejner and Anna (Rosendahl) Gronbeck, was born September 21, 1929, in Ayrshire, Iowa. She attended school in Ayrshire, graduating from Ayrshire High School in 1947.
On August 25, 1948, Ellen was united in marriage to Harold Saxton in Dubuque, Iowa. To this union five children were born. Ellen was employed at Ted's Super Value, Berkeley's and J.C. Penney's, where she was employed for ten years. She worked at the Emmetsburg Vet Clinic with Dr. Frevert for fourteen years. Ellen and Harold both worked at the Palo Alto County jail, where Ellen cooked meals. She and Harold provided day care to several children in Emmetsburg from 1990 until 2010.
Ellen was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg and the Pythian Sisters. She helped with 4-H groups in the area and especially loved helping them learn to sew.
Ellen loved having coffee and visiting with her friends. The coffee pot was always on and there were cookies to share with her friends and family, whenever they stopped in. She loved to share stories about her grandchildren, what they were doing and where they lived. One wall in her home was devoted to nothing but framed photos of them.
Ellen passed away Sunday, July 1, 2018 at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg, Iowa, at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold on July 29, 2008; her brothers, Carl Gronbeck, Martin Gronbeck, Chris Gronbeck, and Peter Gronbeck; and a sister, Ida Kudron.
She is survived by her children, Larry (Debbie) Saxton of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Ronnie (Elaine) Saxton of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Roezanne Saxton of Ankeny, Iowa, Linda (Joe) Kent of Agency, Iowa and Carol (Duane) Looft of Ledyard, Iowa; her grandchildren, Laura (Jason) Skalicky, Matt (Vicki) Saxton, Lisa (Ryan) White, Mandy (Jason) Farrow, Keith Coady, John (Heidi) Looft, Tara (Travis) Whitaker, Jaimes (Krista) Looft; her great grandchildren, Regan and Owen Saxton, McKenzie Saxton, Lucas Skalicky, Olivia Skalicky, Aidan Skalicky, Vincent Skalicky, Declan White, Calvin Farrow, Lilah Farrow, Jacob Looft and Luke Looft; as well as many other relatives and friends.
