Evon Marilyn Rosewall was born on April 25, 1933 to Lena Mildred Whitford Rosewall and George Clarence Rosewall. She was the third of four children, born and raised on farms near Lost Island Lake. She first attended country school and then later attended and graduated from Ruthven High School as class Salutatorian in 1951.
After high school Evon attended Teacher's College in Estherville, Ia and then later at what is now known as the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. From there she began teaching 6th grade in rural Havelock. The majority of her teaching years was divided between Graettinger, where she taught for 16 years and Cumberland-Massena where she taught for around 21 years. When she retired at the age of 62 she had taught a total of 43 years. While teaching in Graettinger, Evon would commute to Mankato for evening classes after teaching 6th grade all day, and on weekends and during summer months as well. She graduated from Mankato State University, with her Bachelors Degree in Education which became mandated by the State. Over the years, Evon was thrilled how she was remembered by former students… as being their favorite teacher.
Evon met Ronald Allen Struthers while in high school at the county fair. She said he wouldn't leave her alone and chased her incessantly until she finally gave in. They were married on April 19, 1953 in Ruthven.
In the early years of their marriage, Ron was serving in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Fort Leonard Wood. During that time Evon lived with her in-laws on their rural farm south of Ayrshire. In 1955 she gave birth, on the Army Base, to her first born, Randy Allen. After Ron was discharged they moved to a farm near Emmetsburg and in 1958 Evon gave birth to their second child, Shelley.
Evon saw changes from party line telephones to having her own Smartphone, from the first black and white T.V. to her 40 inch Smart T.V., and reveled at the invention of the microwave and dishwasher. She also became an avid Facebook user, read books on her Kindle and loved asking Alexa what the weather report was. Evon shared a passion for horses with Ron, dancing the polka, waltz, square dancing and later line dancing with their friends in the Valley.
A few short years after retiring, Ron and Evon sold their home in Cumberland, and bought a fifth wheel and 30 foot camper and lived on the road for several years. They traveled from Florida to Arizona, from New York to Washington State, and finally decided to set down roots near Mission, Texas. They then split their time between wintering in the Texas Valley and summers in Iowa.
Evon passed away on Sunday, September 26, 2021 in Sioux Falls, SD, after suffering from a stroke, at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, Ron of Spencer, Iowa; children, Randy Struthers of Ruthven, Iowa and Shelley Helmich of Templeton, Iowa; five grandchildren and great grandchildren, Sarah (Josh) Naig and their son, Cade, daughter Ashlyn, and son Devon; Robert (Courtney) Struthers and their children Grace Evon, Rhett, and Roy; Stacey (Stan) Rolenc and their children Weston, Garrett, Rhenn and Tessa; Adam Becker and his son, Cameron; Ashley (Joe) Myers and their children Caden and Dylan Myers.
