Georgia LeVerne Kassel, daughter of Milo and Elsie (Hronish) Josifek, was born December 25, 1924 in Geddes, South Dakota. She began her education in country school in South Dakota. Georgia's family moved to Iowa in 1934, where she attended country school and then Silver Lake Community School where she graduated from high school.
On September 21, 1946 Georgia was united in marriage to Lawrence Virgil Kassel at the United Methodist Church in Ayrshire. To this union four children were born.
Georgia and Lawrence farmed near Ayrshire, where Georgia was as active as Lawrence in the farming. She loved living on the farm, cooking for the farm help and delivering meals to the field or serving them at her home.
Georgia was known to bake a great loaf of bread, as well as her famous cinnamon rolls. She raised chickens and sold eggs for many years. People in the area liked to stop and buy eggs where they would then be offered some baked goods to eat and enjoy a cup of egg coffee.
Georgia raised a large garden each year, canning and freezing her produce. She also enjoyed her flowers and had several flower beds, that she took great pride in. She did a lot of sewing for herself and her children. She enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels, especially since moving to the Emmetsburg Care Center.
Georgia moved to the Care Center three years ago after breaking a hip and quickly called it her second home. She made many friends there and enjoyed the staff, residents and visiting with all the folks who came to see their own family and friends. Georgia stayed interested and involved in all aspects of farming throughout her life.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ayrshire. Georgia enjoyed Bible study and attending the weekly church services while she was a resident of the Care Center.
Georgia passed away Sunday, February 5, 2017 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, Iowa, at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence in 2005; son-in-law, Gary Heiman; a sister, Vonica Cottington; as well as a brother-in-law, Garth Cottington.
She is survived by her children, Linda Heiman (Dennis Franker) of Ayrshire, Iowa, Peggy (Jim) McDonald of Scranton, Iowa, Susan (Roger) Guge of Estherville, Iowa and Craig (Debbie) Kassel of Emmetsburg, Iowa; eight grandchildren; five step grandchildren; six great grandchildren; eleven step great grandchildren; as well as many other relatives and friends.
