Helen Freidel, daughter of Harry and Edna (Seyl) Lydon, was born August 23, 1929 in Belden, Nebraska.   She received her education in the Beldon school system.  Helen met her future husband, Elmer at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota.

On February 1, 1951 Helen was united in marriage to Elmer Freidel in Sioux City, Iowa.  To this union three children were born.  Helen and Elmer farmed south of Emmetsburg for many years. They were a team and Helen enjoyed being a farmer's wife. Elmer and Helen had the joy of celebrating 67 years together.

Helen was  a faithful and devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church and a fifty year member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Helen and Elmer enjoyed traveling around the United States as well as Europe, where they visited the Vatican and Lourdes.  Helen also enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening.  She liked sewing, knitting and especially doing embroidery work.  Her grandkids were well loved and she cherished all the times she spent with them.  She was overjoyed to become "Grandma Great", and they will always remember times together at holidays and birthdays and the way she made them laugh and feel special.

Helen was one of the sweetest, kindest, most generous individuals.  She was always on the go and constantly busy.  She was funny, whether she meant to be or not and was the best chocolate chip cookie maker there was.  She always made sure you were well fed, whether you were hungry or not.

Helen was always looking to help someone, make a day easier for others and to share a smile.  She found fulfillment in the small things of life, such as a juicy tomato to share, teaching a life lesson, keeping candy or nutty bars where the kids could find them, having a cup of coffee with a friend or loved one or shouting out BINGO.  She loved going to Bingo with her friends and granddaughters.

Overall, it will be the memories and love that loved ones will keep in their hearts, that Helen can be most proud of.

Helen passed away Thursday, June 10, 2021 at the Emmetsburg Care Center, at the age of 91.  She was preceded in death by an infant son; her parents, Harry and Edna Lydon; her husband, Elmer; a sister, Lois Korn; sister-in-law, Delores; and a brother-in-law, Lorin.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen Kauffman and her husband, Gary of Emmetsburg, Iowa; her son, Dennis Freidel and his wife, Michelle of St. Charles, Illinois; fourteen grandchildren; twenty four great grandchildren; as well as many other relatives and friends.
