James D. Harvey, son of Bud (Albert Lee) and Henrietta (Sherlock) Harvey, was born July 7, 1927, on a farm south of Graettinger, Iowa. In 1932, Jim's family moved to the family farm near Ayrshire. He completed his high school education at Silver Lake Consolidated School.
In July 1945 Jim enlisted in the United States Navy, serving during World War II, on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Bunker Hill, CV17 where he was number one throttle man. After being honorably discharged, Jim returned to Palo Alto County where he farmed near Ayrshire.
On December 26, 1953, Jim was united in marriage to Janet Kibbie at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ayrshire. To this union three children were born (Sandy, Teri, and Bill).
Jim farmed, raised livestock and was a renowned Auctioneer. Jim also did crop insurance adjusting and real estate appraisals. Jim was active in auctioneering most of his life. He sold farm sales, livestock sales, real estate and household auctions throughout northwest Iowa and in other parts of the country. Jim cared deeply for people and loved visiting with everyone he was around. This was a gift that certainly contributed to his success as an auctioneer.
Jim was an active member of the Catholic Church. He was also active in the Ayrshire American Legion and had just received an award this year for 70 years of consecutive service.
Jim enjoyed dancing, singing, fishing and hunting. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Jim was always ready to tell a story about what his grandchildren were doing and how they were getting along in school. He was incredibly proud of each of them. He had a great sense of humor and would tell thousands of stories.
Jim passed away Thursday, January 26, 2017, at the Ruthven Community Care Center, after battling cancer since 2001. He had resided at the Ruthven Assisted Living for the past year. He was preceded in death by his parents; Bud and Henrietta; his wife, Janet; daughter, Teri Harvey; his brothers, Dan Harvey and Ken Harvey; and a sister, Dorothy Carpenter.
He is survived by his children, Sandy Giffin and her husband, Alan of Kingwood, Texas and Bill Harvey and his wife, Vicki of Champlin, Minnesota; grandchildren, Derek Giffin, Jamie Giffin, Erin Harvey, Brennan Harvey, Jessi Harvey, and Kendall Harvey; foster son, Jeff Wilson and his wife, Gayle of Mt. Sterling, Illinois; brother, Richard Harvey and his wife, Karen of Athens, Ohio; as well as many other beloved nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
