On January 3rd, 2023, James "Jim" Robert McCarthy was called home at the age of 80.  Jim was surrounded by family when he peacefully died at the Ruthven Community Care Center in Ruthven, Iowa.

Jim was born on September 5, 1942 to Robert & Mary (Welsh) McCarthy. He graduated from Benson High School and then obtained a degree in Agricultural Business from the University of Minnesota, Morris.  Jim went on to work for the IRS in St Paul while helping out on the family farm in DeGraff, Minnesota and later moved back to farm full-time until his retirement.

Jim very much enjoyed camaraderie with his neighborhood friends, spending time with his family, and took great pride in being a Grandpa.  Some of the family's fondest memories of Jimmy include taking road trips, spending time on the lake & fishing, trips to the State Fair & Irish parade, eating out, and skiing.  Jim also liked to spend time with his dogs, watching movies, and taking trips into Benson to catch up on the local gossip.

Jim is survived by his wife, Maxine of 36 years; children Tony Waytashek (& Becky), Karen Leach (& Daryl), Mary Woodford (& Eric), and Sarah Thomas (& Reno); 16 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; his sisters Mary Hilliard (& Bruce) and Carol Mach; and 7 nieces and nephews. Jim is preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to especially thank: Father Brian Hughes for providing Last Rites, Father Peter Fransco for praying with the family, and the staff of Ruthven Community Care Center and Gentiva Hospice for their compassionate care of Jim.
