Jean Marie Ferguson, daughter of Bert and Mabel (Battin) Mills, was born April 8, 1932 near Webb, Iowa. She received her education at Webb Community School, graduating in 1950. Following graduation, Jean attended Cosmetology school in Waterloo.

After finishing her education, Jean moved to Sioux Rapids where she opened Jean's Beauty Shop. While living in Sioux Rapids, Jean met Claire Ferguson at Helen's Café. After a short courtship, she and Fergie were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa on August 10, 1951. To this union a daughter and son were born.

Jean and Fergie owned and operated Farm Implement in Sioux Rapids for many years. Jean was known for her baked goods that she took to the shop every day for the customers. She shared her cinnamon rolls, cookies, bars and her famous homemade angel food cakes. Jean made over 125 of these cakes a year to share with friends, family and customers.

Jean and her family lived in town until 1965 when they moved to their acreage east of town. While living there Jean enjoyed her large garden, horses, chickens, dogs and peacocks. She loved entertaining and having guests in her home.

Jean was a member of the First United Church and numerous card clubs in Sioux Rapids. She was also a member of Little Sioux Golf and Country Club where she played golf. She also enjoyed spending time at their lake home on Spirit Lake, where she fished, baked and entertained. Jean spent fifteen years volunteering in the 3rd grade class at Sioux Central School. She was known to each of the students as "Grandma Jean". Her own grandchildren were blessed to have her present at nearly every event they participated in. She was truly a loving and fun grandma.

Jean not only cared for her own family but sent countless cards and letters to anyone that was sick, having a birthday, anniversary or any other event to be acknowledged.

Jean passed away Sunday, November 20, 2016 at the Hawkeye Care Center in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Duane "Jack" Mills; sister, Joann Johnson; brothers-in-law, Raymond Lyons, Lester Hoben and Gary Larson; sisters-in-law, Lois Mills, Phyllis "Dutch" Hoben, Mavis "Mae" Ferguson and Sally Ferguson.

She is survived by her husband, Claire "Fergie" of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; her children, Martha Ferguson of Spencer, Iowa and Bruce and Lisa Ferguson of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren, Jason and Rachel Ferguson of West Des Moines, Iowa, Justin and Lacey Ferguson of Royal, Iowa and Michele Ferguson of Grundy Center, Iowa; brother, Larry "Buck" and Mary Mills of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; sisters, Joy Larson of Remsen, Iowa, Marlene Rounds of Spencer, Iowa and Linda and Gene Tempas of Austin, Texas; brothers-in-law, Jim Johnson of Sioux City, Iowa and Marvin Ferguson of Laurens, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Darlene "Swede" and Jerry Parr of Colorado; as well as many other relatives and friends.
