Joan Marie Firkins, daughter of Roy and Frances (Foust) Hauschen, was born August 14, 1933 in Emmetsburg, Iowa.  She received her education in Emmetsburg, graduating from Emmetsburg High School in 1952.  Following high school Joan was employed at the telephone company.

On February 14, 1954 Joan was united in marriage to Leon Firkins at the Presbyterian Church in Rodman, Iowa.  To this union five children were born.  Joan and Leon lived in Rodman for a few years before moving to Emmetsburg where they raised their family.  Besides caring for her children, Joan did sewing and tailoring  for many people in the area.  She was a beautiful seamstress and made countless quilts and baby blankets for her children, grandchildren and friends.

Joan and Leon enjoyed many winters in New Braunfels, Texas.  They made many friends there and  enjoyed getting together for coffee and visiting.  Joan and Leon had done a lot of traveling throughout the United States, often times on the motorcycle.

Joan was a member of Eastern Star and had served as Worthy Matron.  She was initiated on April 6, 1964 and received her 50 year pin in April 2014.

Joan passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, at the age of 87.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Frances Hauschen; her husband, Leon on January 14, 2015; two brothers, John and Regan; and three sisters, Estelle, Jean and Mary.

She is survived by her children, Kevin Firkins of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Kermit Firkins of Des Moines, Iowa, Alan (Carla) Firkins of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Aaron (Rhonda) Firkins of West Des Moines, Iowa and Judy (John) Held of Merrill, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Jonathan Firkins, Joshua Firkins, Jeremy Firkins, Jacob Firkins, Justin Firkins, Cody Firkins, Nathan Held, Logan Held and Danielle Firkins; great grandchildren, Caton, Andrew, Aubrie, Rylie, Bella, Talon, Ally, Carly, Tatum, Brynlee, Beckett, Carter, Gavin, Gauge, Rylan and Bashlin; sisters, June Manwarren of Emmetsburg, Iowa and Bernice Lillegard of Stockbridge, Georgia; several nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
