Joan Delores Hauschen, daughter of Heike and Myrtle (Shellabarger) Garrelts, was born May 13, 1931 in Ayrshire, Iowa. She received her education in Ayrshire, graduating from Silver Lake High School. Following high school Joan was employed at the telephone company in Emmetsburg.
On September 10, 1950, Joan was united in marriage to Ellsworth Hauschen at Zion Lutheran Church in Ayrshire. To this union five children were born.
Joan and Butch farmed together for many years. Joan also was employed with Willing Workers for six years and while working there, Joan loved to go roller skating with the clients, sometimes even getting Butch to go along. Joan's love of ceramics inspired her to open her own ceramic business in 1981. People from all around Emmetsburg came to learn to do ceramics from Joan. She and Butch retired and moved into Emmetsburg in the early 1990s.
While living on the farm Joan always had a big garden, canning the produce they grew. She will be remembered by her family for her delicious meals, especially her homemade cookies. Joan was a seamstress and sewed many of her children's clothes and later made baby clothes for the church. She also enjoyed quilting and made many quilts for her family and friends to enjoy. Joan liked to travel with Butch to various places throughout the United States. Joan's family was very important to her and she especially loved being a grandmother and spending time with her grandchildren.
