As a young boy, John became known as Gene to his family and friends. After graduating from Ayrshire High School in 1951, Gene served in the United States Army, during the Korean Conflict. He was inducted on December 3, 1952 serving until December 3, 1954. Gene was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. After being honorably discharged, he returned to his home to "Silver Meadows", where he farmed for many years.
