John Gerald Vaughan, son of Steve and Mary (Flynn) Vaughan, was born March 13, 1932 on his family's farm near Mallard, Iowa. He received his education in Mallard, graduating from Mallard High School in 1951. In ninth grade Johnny met his high school sweetheart, Vonita Auten, who he later married. Johnny served in the United States Army. He was stationed on the Czechoslovakia and Germany border where he was a lineman.
After being honorably discharged from the service, Johnny began working at the Emmetsburg Grain Company where he was employed for 45 years, before his retirement.
On June 14, 1958 Johnny was united in marriage to Vonita Auten in Mallard, Iowa. To this union five children were born.
Johnny was a member of Holy Family Parish where he served many years as an usher. He was also a member of the V.F.W. Post #2295 in Emmetsburg.
Johnny enjoyed going to Ken Krause Motors for coffee with his buddies. Johnny and Vonita enjoyed collecting antiques and Johnny especially liked collecting lunch boxes and cigarettes. He liked watching western movies and t.v. shows. Johnny was particularly proud of growing up as a "river rat" and of his 100% Irish heritage. As a young boy, Johnny liked to ride horses and will be remembered for his pranks he pulled such as tipping over outhouses.
Johnny passed away Friday, April 8, 2016 at PARC Hall in Emmetsburg, Iowa, at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his parents; twin infant daughters, Mary and Marie; brother, Pat Vaughan; brother-in-law, Dennis Schumacher; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Virgil and Viola Auten.
