Lawrence (Larry) Edward Kliegl was born July 28, 1932, on the family farm northeast of Emmetsburg where he was raised.  He was the son of John Adam and Margaret Ann (Conway) Kliegl.  He graduated from Emmetsburg Catholic High School in 1951.

Larry enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Virginia where he trained in photolithography.  He served until being honorably discharged in 1954.

On June 27, 1959, he was united in marriage to Leola Lillian Gravlund at Assumption Catholic Church in Emmetsburg and were blessed with five children. Larry and Leola made their home in Emmetsburg, where they raised their family. Larry worked 16 years for the ASCS Office (Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service), and 20 years for Palo Alto County until his retirement in 1995.

Larry was a long-time faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church.  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, as well as the V.F.W. in Emmetsburg, helping with many events including placing flags at the cemetery on Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and other holidays and working at the many fish fries during Lent.

Larry loved hunting and fishing and enjoyed his many Canadian and Minnesota fishing expeditions or just fishing at Five Island Lake and other area lakes.  He looked forward to the annual St. Patrick's Day celebration and was an Emmetsburg E'Hawk 'super fan' even after his kids graduated.  Larry and Leola enjoyed spending time with their many friends and family, taking family vacations with their kids when they were growing up, and later bus trips during their retirement years.

Larry passed away Saturday, November 11, 2023, at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg at the age of 91.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Leola, his parents and 10 brothers and sisters (Opal, Teresa, Robert, Josephine, Virginia, Marjorie, Gertrude, John, Ellen, Joseph).

Larry left many people behind to mourn his loss, including daughters, Lynn Blass (Randy), Cheryl Bakker (Doug); sons, Greg Kliegl (Patti), Jeff Kliegl (Niccie), and Tom Kliegl (Debbie); his eight grandchildren, Brittany (Tyler), Raya, (Justen) Andrew, Riley, Brett, Julia, Jeffrey, and Matthew; and two great grandchildren, Iris and Theia, as well as his brother George (Evelyn) and many other relatives and friends.
