Marion Yvette Miller, daughter of John and Ruby (Strain) McDonald, was born on her family's farm near Ames, Iowa. She received her education in country school and graduated from Graettinger High School in 1944. At an early age, Marion became known to her family and friends as Bette.

On December 27, 1946, Bette was united in marriage to LeRoy Miller at the United Methodist Church in Graettinger, Iowa. To this union four children were born.

Bette was employed as a phone operator for Northwestern Bell and later helped with Emmetsburg Cement Block Company and Miller Construction.  She also worked at Joyce's Foodland and was a cook for the Emmetsburg Community School.

Bette was a member of the First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, in Emmetsburg. She was also a member of the Pythian Sisters and the Robert Emmet Society. Bette enjoyed her sewing club as well as playing Bridge and 500 with her family and friends.

Bette and LeRoy had a cabin on the lake where their family enjoyed many fun times. Bette was an avid swimmer and taught Red Cross swimming lessons for several years.
