Lyle enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on June1, 1946 in Des Moines, Iowa and served until May 15, 1947 when he was honorably discharged. He then returned to Palo Alto County.
On May 1, 1949 Lyle was united in marriage to Betty Lou Hough at Lyle's parents' home in Emmetsburg, due to the fact that Bethany Lutheran Church was being built.
Lyle worked as a carpenter, building several homes, including their home. He later went to work for Winnebago Industries in Forest City where he was employed for several years. In 1961 he then went to work for the United States Postal Service and retired in 1991 as the Postmaster in Curlew.
Lyle was a faithful member of Bethany Lutheran Church and sang in the church choir for many years. He served on the St. Pat's Board and was very instrumental in getting the well know musicians and entertainers booked for the weekend. He was a member of the Jaycees and sang in the Barber Shop group in Algona.
Lyle will be remembered for his talent as a musician. He loved singing, playing his guitar as well as many other instruments. He was inducted into the Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007.
Lyle enjoyed doing woodworking projects and was an avid bowler. He had an extensive collection of arrowheads and Indian artifacts that he collected throughout the area. He also collected stamps, coins and many other interesting items, such as barbed wire. Lyle also loved fishing, hunting and following the E'Hawks and Hawkeyes. He loved spending time with his family and friends.
