Margaret Elizabeth Gowans, daughter of Henry James and Helga (Juhl) Gowans, was born December 4, 1920 on her family farm north of Depew, Iowa. She attended Country School near Depew and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1938. Peg, as she was known to her family and friends, completed Normal Training classes so that she could teach school. She taught country school for a few years prior to her marriage.
On May 21, 1944, Peg was united in marriage to Lyle "Red" Thompson at the Gowan's home near Depew. To this union three children were born.
Peg and Red farmed near Depew where Peg was active as a farmwife and mother. She provided meals and lunches that will not be forgotten by any of the workers or her family. She was a fabulous cook and well known for her cinnamon rolls on Sunday mornings and roast beef dinners for Sunday noon. It was important for her to always offer her guests something she had baked, along with a cup of her egg coffee.
Peg was a devoted member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Depew, where she took care of the Altar Cloths for many years. She was a Prayer Warrior, always concerned about others. Peg remained on the farm until 2011 when she moved to Emmetsburg and made her home at Lakeside Lutheran Home.
Peg's family was always of utmost importance to her. She loved visiting with her extended family and keeping informed about each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Peg passed away Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Lakeside Lutheran Home, at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Monte Thompson; three brothers, John Gowans, Robert Gowans and William Gowans; and an infant sister, Dorothea Jean Gowans.
She is survived by a daughter, Christy (Dave) White of Emmetsburg, Iowa and a son Jim (Cindy) Thompson of Cylinder, Iowa; six grandchildren, Scott Thompson, Heid Krause, Jamie Gavle, Brett Thompson, Josh White and Ryan White; seven great grandchildren, Tyler Thompson, Ashley Thompson, Shelby Krause, Austin Krause, Maggie Gavle, Elise Gavle and Declan White; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
