Marge
Brown
d. Feb 11, 2018
Emmetsburg, formerly Ruthven
Margie Leona Thomson was born March 25, 1917, to William L. Thomson & Margaret (Coburn) Thomson at their farm near Rodman, Iowa. She graduated from Rodman High School and attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls and taught in a one- room schoolhouse near Depew. The following year she was able to get a teaching position in a one-room school house just north of her parents' home which allowed her to stay at home and help her father with the farming in the summer.
Margie married W.J. "Bill" Brown in Emmetsburg Catholic Church June 1, 1940. They farmed southeast of Ruthven where she and Bill raised their four children. When the Ruthven School burned down and teachers were needed, she returned to teaching grades 1 through 8 in the country school house three miles west of their farm. Margie was an active partner in Bill's farming operation-working in the fields, in the barns, and in the bookkeeping area to create a farming enterprise of which they both were proud. In addition to her farming and teaching and maintaining a spotless home, Margie was also active in her church and volunteered at Lakeside Lutheran Home. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a tireless worker in the Guild and a long time member of Catholic Daughters of America.
Margie and Bill lived together for 68 years until his death in 2008. They enjoyed traveling, wintering in Texas, and enjoying time with family and friends. Following Bill's death in 2008, Margie moved to Willow Ridge, and in October of 2016 she moved to Emerald Oaks assisted living until February of 2017. In March of 2017 she celebrated her 100th Birthday while living in Parc Hall where she resided until her death on February 11, 2018 at Spencer Hospital after having suffered a fall.
Left to mourn are her daughter Colleen "Coke" Anderson (Ken Bertness); son Bill (Connie) Brown; son-in-law Dennis Finnegan; and daughter Mary (John) Hoefner.
Her eleven grandchildren are: Angie (Todd) DeGooyer, Jeannette Raglen; Heather (Scott) Wirtz, Trisha Bruning, Erin (Jeff) Schany, Todd Brown; Sheena (Mike) Vojta, Ryan (Jennifer) Finnegan, Megan (Keith) Boyd; Josie (Jeremy) Feldman, and Jen Kenney.
Margie was also blessed with twenty living great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Wilda Freeman; a brother, John Thomson, husband Bill, daughter Jane Finnegan, son-in-law, Marvin Anderson; and great grandson Nicholas DeGooyer.
