Marjorie Selma Trelstad, daughter of Melvin J. and Selma C. (Charleson) Bergland, was born March 2, 1928 in Lake Mills, Iowa. She attended country school through seventh grade and then attended Lake Mills Community School, graduating in 1946.
On August 28, 1948, Marge was united in marriage to Allen P. Trelstad at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. To this union three children were born. Marge and Allen made their home in Emmetsburg where Marge worked along side her husband, Allen, in their State Farm Insurance business.
Inspired by music, Marge shared her gift throughout the community in many ways. As an 8th grade student, she began her career as church organist in her home town of Lake Mills and continued as a church musician for over fifty years. There were countless piano students and recitals, contest participants, weddings and funerals. Marge was a founding member of Mainstreet Community Theatre. Music brought joy to every aspect of her life, therefore, to many others as well.
Marge was a devoted and faithful member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. She was also a member of Mainstreet Community Theatre and the Red Hat Club.
Marge and Allen enjoyed many years at Okoboji. Summers were a special time for Marge and her grandchildren. Many of the kids learned to walk, swim and ski while staying with their grandparents in Okoboji. They all looked forward to the favorite meals and treats she made for each of them.
Marge passed away Sunday, June 19, 2016, at the Palo Alto County Hospital at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Selma Bergland and her sister, Edith Sorenson.
She is survived by her husband, Allen of Emmetsburg, Iowa; her children, Bruce A. Trelstad (Denise) of Maple Valley, Washington, Pamela S. Trelstad (Frank Esser) of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Marsha J. Gift (Andy) of Denver, Colorado; her grandchildren, Allen Guthart, Laren Trelstad, Travis Trelstad, Joseph Gift, Amanda Trelstad, Emma Gift, Rachel Manternach (Andy), Nora Gift, Nate Esser (Jill), and Alison Esser (Jason); nine great grandchildren; as well as many other relatives and friends.
