Mark Anthony Hood, 58, was born in Louisville, KY on Nov. 5, 1964.  He joined the U.S. Army at a very early age and worked on big guns for the Department of the Navy.  At age 24 Mark became an air traffic controller.  He worked in Louisville, KY for eight years and then transferred to the New York TRACON where he worked as a controller and trainer.   While working as an air traffic controller Mark served on the NACTA contract team. He even earned his private pilot's license which would come in handy later when he served on the airport committee for the city of Estherville, IA.

During his 18 years in New York, Mark joined the F&A Masons, becoming part of the Knights Templar, Red Cross of Constantine and a Shriner.  He served in the Suffolk County staff office in Suffolk, NY from 2008-2010.  He was also the District Deputy Grand Master of the Suffolk District from 2010-2012.

Mark was known for his love of cooking, party planning and hospitality.  He loved to smoke meats, make homemade sausage, and cook good old southern food. His meals were better than any you could get from even the best restaurants. If he cooked for you, you never went away hungry. He even designed and built his own smoke house. He genuinely cared for people, checking in with friends and family routinely via texts and phone calls just to see how they were doing, and to offer words of encouragement.

Mark loved going on cruises. He crossed the Atlantic twice, the Pacific once, and went through the Panama Canal for a full transition. His love of art is plain to see in his collection of numerous artists including Salvidor Dali. He loved music and played the guitar for many years. His beautiful tenor voice joined with others in singing praises to the Lord.

Mark was joined in marriage to Cindy (Truelsen) on Feb. 29, 1996 in Charlestown, IN.  They shared many great times together including traveling, hobbies and growing closer in faith to Christ together.

Mark passed away Monday, Nov. 21, 2022, at his home in Estherville, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law, son Mark Jr., and brother Patrick Hood, Jr.  He is survived by his wife Cindy Hood of Estherville, IA, sons Timothy (Erin) Smirniotis of Fernandina Beach, FL, Dustin (Jessica) Hood of Arlington, VA, and Christopher Hood of Estherville. Daughter Patricia (Stanley) Jackson of Fernandina, FL. Four grandchildren: Carter and Paislee Smirniotis and Stanley and Patrick Jackson all of Fernandina, FL.   Brother Wilbert (Karen) Clayton Jr., and sisters Marjorie (Thomas) White, Wilberta (Wayne) Mack, Marie Clayton, Vicki Hood, and Kathy Hood. As well as his card playing partners, extended family and friends.
