Martin Clement Fogarty was the fourth son of Lorena Neary-Fogarty and William Patrick Fogarty. He was born on September 1, 1933 on his parents' one-hundred-year farm in Fern Valley Township, a short distance north of Rodman, Iowa. Martin attended the Rodman school for twelve years, playing basketball and baseball. His senior year he was starting forward for Coach Dutch Shriner's 1951 team (Richard Forey, Julian Erickson, James Bargman and James Schmidt) that recorded a 25-2 record, missing the state tournament by one game. After high school, Martin was recruited by Jack Kaley at Estherville Junior College, for two years starting as guard on a good "Wolves" team. During the two years, Martin teamed with Don Reuland, Dick Iverson, Doc Archer and Bob Weber. He had a special interest in baseball, playing during the summer in Bassett, Creighton and Hartington with his longtime classmate, neighbor, and friend - Julian Erickson.
While in college Martin earned a teaching certificate, teaching elementary school in Royal and Rodman. He spent a summer at Iowa Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. Martin's teaching mate at Royal, Lee Thomson, continued to UNI and influenced Martin's career change. Lee stayed at UNI and became a major player in building their campus, leading a task force in building the UNI Dome.
A military draft pending, Martin volunteered his number, being inducted at Fort Riley, Kansas. After initial training, he was shipped to Wurzburg, Germany where he would stay for seventeen months. He made the 10th Division Artillery baseball team, traveling to different cities and taking every opportunity to see as much of Europe as possible. A highlight was paying respects at his cousin's grave, Captain Thomas N. Montag, near Saint James, France. Another highlight was the Pilgrimage that the Division Chaplin organized with religious stops throughout Italy. He was blessed to attend the Mass offered by Padre Pio, a Stigmata who would, years later, be canonized a Saint by Pope John Paul, II. Also, a day later be in an audience with Pope Pius X at his summer residence.
After his service time, Martin had a career change, into newspaper printing, most of the time in composing room work in Story City, Lemars, Storm Lake, Beloit, Wisconsin, Chicago and Lincoln, Nebraska. Due to declining health, Martin moved back to Iowa to be closer to family in 2019.
Martin enjoyed refinishing furniture and working security for spring baseball training. He loved traveling and had the opportunity to go to Ireland two times, to Japan and all of the states around Arizona. Genealogy was very important to Martin and he spent countless hours searching for ancestors. He kept extensive records of his findings. Seeing the family farm celebrate 100 years in 2019 was a great highlight in Martin's life.
