Mary Nemmers, daughter of William F. and Helen Marie (Butterfield) Doocy, was born March 8, 1938 in Swea City, Iowa. She received her education at St. John's Catholic School in Bancroft, Iowa.
On April 27, 1957 Mary was united in marriage to Eugene "Gene" Nemmers at St. John's Catholic Church in Bancroft. They were blessed with five children. Mary was employed at Nieman's Sewing Center, Team Sport, and Merry Maids in Spencer. She cleaned many homes throughout the area including the rectory at Sacred Heart.
Mary was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer. She served as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Spencer Little League for many years and ran the concession stand every summer. Many former baseball players refer to her as their "baseball mom". Mary was a gifted seamstress; making wedding, bridesmaid, and prom dresses, clothes for family and friends, doing alterations, designing and sewing priest vestments, and activity banners for local school districts. She was a fabulous cook and baker, being most famous for her Scotcheroos. She has a handwritten cookbook with all of her favorite recipes that family members often called her for. Mary had a beautiful flower garden that she enjoyed caring for at her home and Pederson Park. Mary enjoyed spending time playing bingo and traveling to area casinos with Gene, family, and friends. She especially looked forward to the trips she and her sisters took in search of the "Jackpot". Mary had many talents and was so willing to share those with her church and her community but the two things most important in Mary's life were her faith and her family. Each of her family members knew the depth of Mary's love for them.
Mary passed away surrounded by her family, Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Helen Doocy; her in-laws, Clarence and Martha Nemmers; her husband, Gene; a grandson, Adam Liddle; brothers, Billy, Jim and Phil Doocy; sister, Patty Bernhard, and other cherished family members.
She is survived by her children Mark (Julie), Marcia, Marty, and Pat, of Spencer, Iowa and Angi of Brandon, South Dakota; nine grandchildren, (Sue), Matt (Mandy), Alicia (Chris), Ryan (Brandon), Luke, Zachary (Victoria), Collin, Brady (Kathi), Anya, and Melanie (Brian); great grandchildren, Skylar, Jacob, Devon, Hudson, Mazie, Jayci, Tayten, Easton, Atlas, Grace, Natalie, and Piper; sisters, Helen Marie Doocy of Bancroft, Iowa and Sherry Nitz of Lockhart, Texas; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Maxine Kollasch of Bancroft, Iowa, Linda (Charlie) Carlson of Tipton, Iowa, John (Kathy) Nemmers of Algona, Iowa, Tom Nemmers of Des Moines, Iowa, Linda Nemmers of Bancroft, Iowa, Colleen Ulses (Roger) of Bancroft, Iowa and Mary Pat Nemmers of Algona, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
