Mary Anita (Fitzpatrick) Weiland, daughter of Bart and Annie (Donahue) Fitzpatrick, was born March 2, 1923 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. She began her education in country school and completed her education at St. Mary's Academy, graduating in 1941. Following high school Mary attended Cedar Falls Teacher's College where she earned her teaching certificate.
After completion of her certificate, Mary returned to Palo Alto County where she taught in country school south of Emmetsburg.
On September 20, 1948, Mary was united in marriage to Arthur F. Weiland at Assumption Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. They made their home in Wisconsin for a short time before moving back to Emmetsburg. They were blessed with four children.
Mary was a devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary in Emmetsburg and Garden Club. Mary was very involved with the St. Patrick's Association for countless years, helping in any capacity she was needed in. She and Art hosted the dignitaries for many years, seeing that they made it to every event scheduled on time. Mary was also instrumental in the development of the Robert Emmet Society which she was proud to be a member of. She also donated her talent by playing the organ at the Emmetsburg Care Center.
Mary enjoyed playing cards, sewing, gardening and reading. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and was very proud of her family. Mary expounded on her skill of writing by becoming a news correspondent for the Fort Dodge Messenger. Mary will be remembered by her friends and family for her love of "sparring", as she called it. It often led to some very interesting conversations.
Mary moved to Omaha, Nebraska two years ago to be near her family. She passed away Saturday, April 2, 2016 in Bellevue, Nebraska, at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur; brother, John Fitzpatrick; and a grandson, Benjamin Meyer Weiland.
