Mildred Jean Furtado was born October 18, 1932 to George Jacintho and Virginia Marie (Freitas) Furtado in Honolulu, Hawaii.  She received her education in Honolulu.  Mildred became known as Jeannie to her family and friends and kept that name throughout her life.

Growing up, Jeannie and her family lived near Pearl Harbor.  At the time of the attack she was just nine years old.  She often told stories about her experiences.  One day her father was delivering cement near Pearl Harbor when his truck was hit with several bullets shot from an airplane.  He was pulled from his truck to seek cover and safety.  Jeannie often told of how she remembered bullets hitting their metal roof on their home and painting the windows black so that at night, when their lights were on, they would not be seen.  When the children were finally able to return to school, they learned how to put on and wear their gas masks in case they were needed.  One day she recalled a bomb landing between her home and her neighbor's home and how she thanked God that they were not killed as the bomb did not explode.  Knowing that her life had been spared, Jeannie developed a love of reading the Bible and Bible stories each night after her prayers.

Jeannie was married to William Eugene Snavely on March 9, 1954 in Hawaii.  They were blessed with four children and made her home in Iowa.  She enjoyed doing crafts and sewing.  She also liked reading and watching Christmas shows.  Jeannie loved her family very much and always looked forward to going fishing with Randy, cruising in Tim's classic car and Dale's street rod and having mother-daughter lunch dates and shopping outings.

Jeannie passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at her home near Emmetsburg, at the age of 88.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, William "Bill"; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; two sisters, Odelia and Madelyn; and three brothers, George, Jr., Clarence and Randall.

She is survived by her children, Deborah Mefferd (Dale) of Ruthven, Iowa, Connie Sidles (Tim) of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Cindy Wilcoxon (Dale) of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Randy Snavely of Emmetsburg, Iowa and Chris Harris (Sarah) of Texas; thirteen grandchildren; twenty six great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; four brothers, Floyd Theus of Nevada, Jerry Furtado of Hawaii, Nathan Theus of Hawaii and Joseph Freitas of California; a sister, Virginia Mae of Hawaii; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
