Norma Maxine Larsen, daughter of Charles and Anna (Maas) Brawner, was born February 15, 1929 in Dixon, Nebraska. As a young child Norma's family lived in many states which allowed her to attend several different schools throughout her childhood. She completed her education at Emmet Consolidated High School in 1946, graduating Salutatorian of her class. Following high school Norma attended Mankato Business College.
On September 19, 1948, Norma was united in marriage to Elliott Larsen in Graettinger, Iowa. To this union four children were born. Elliott and Norma were blessed to celebrate 72 years.
Prior to her marriage, Norma worked in Estherville. After their children were born, she worked at home on the farm near Ruthven. She later went to Berkley's in Emmetsburg where she was employed for sixteen years before retiring. Norma always seemed to acquire the position of treasurer for many groups that she was involved in. She loved bookkeeping and numbers and at one time managed five checkbooks.
After retiring, Norma and Elliott moved to Spencer for nine years before moving to the Ruthven Community Care Center in 2013. Norma was a member of the Lutheran Church and various church circles, the antique car club and a 500 card club. While living in Spencer she was active in the Legion Auxiliary, and was especially involved in selling poppies prior to Memorial Day each year.
Norma loved gardening and at one time had twenty seven rows of gladiolus. She will be remembered for her cream pies by anyone that had the opportunity to taste them.
Norma died Thursday, June 10, 2021, at the Ruthven Community Care Center in Ruthven, Iowa, at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Anna Brawner; a son, Marvin Larsen; great granddaughter, Piper Schrodt; and a sister, Nila Bisgard.
She is survived by her husband, Elliott of Ruthven, Iowa; her children, Steven (Valerie) Larsen of Eagan, Minnesota, Irvin (Glenda) Larsen of Urbandale, Iowa, and Irene (Bob) Mesenbrink of Arvada, Colorado; seven grandchildren, Tony Olkon-Larsen, Allison Evenson, Ann Davis, Eric Larsen, Amy Schrodt, Emily Keelan and Ross Mesenbrink; twelve great grandchildren; a sister, Gloria Keefer of Iowa City, Iowa; as well as many other relatives and friends.
