Philip Richard Stillman was born March 6, 1930, the seventh child of Charles and Mary Agnes "Mayme" (Ryan) Stillman. He received his education in Emmetsburg, graduating from Emmetsburg High School in 1948. Following high school, Phil attended Iowa State University for two years, before enlisting in the United States military, serving four years in the U.S. Air Force.

Phil served in the 326th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, U.N. Service Medal, National Defense Medal and Good Conduct Medal. During his tour of duty, Phil spent a year in Japan at Yokota Air Base which fostered a life-long interest in the Japanese culture.

After an honorable discharge, Phil returned home to pursue his love of farming. On November 24, 1962, Phil married Ann Bruhn at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Estherville. Together they raised four children on their family farm. Phil and Ann celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary last week.

Phil had a passion for farming. In 1966, he earned the Palo Alto County Outstanding Young Farmer award and in in 1982 he was honored with the Iowa Master Farmer Award.

Phil served the community through volunteer work. He was a 4-H leader for many years and served on the National 4-H Council through 4-H International programs. He was an active member of Palo Alto Farm Bureau serving as President, state voting delegate and on the state advisory board. Phil was a charter member of the Iowa Cattlemen's Association and director of the Iowa Corn Grower's Association. He was chairman of the Palo Alto Bicentennial Committee and served on the Comprehensive Health Planning Advisory Council, the Palo Alto County Hospital Board, the Horizon's Unlimited Board and was a director of the Freedom Township Trustees. Phil was an active and devoted member of the V.F.W. Post #2295, serving as Commander as well as in other offices. He was a faithful member of Holy Family Parish.

Phil enjoyed fishing trips to Canada and playing cards with his friends. His love of farming was evident in his stewardship of the land and his enjoyment of joining other farmers on tractor rides in the area. His greatest love was his family, being together and sharing time with each of them.

Philip passed away Monday, November 28, 2016 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, Iowa at the age of 86. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Marsha Van Genderen; and siblings, Verona Stillman, Laura Marcolini, Charles Stillman, William Stillman and Ruth Talenti.

He is survived by his wife, Ann of Emmetsburg, Iowa; daughters, Maria (Troy) Hertel of Wichita, Kansas and Michelle (Shayne) Kogel of Emmetsburg, Iowa; son, Mark Stillman of Emmetsburg, Iowa; grandchildren, Joshua, Natalie, Megan, Kinsey, Kyle, Kourtney and Kysen; sister, Virginia Hermanson of West Des Moines, Iowa; nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.
