Rena Eldra (Whitford) Hanson, daugther of Charles Henry and Grace Ann (Brown) Whitford, was born January 2, 1909 near Lost Island, in Palo Alto County, Iowa. She received her education at Lake Center School near Dickens, Iowa.

On June 14, 1927 Rena was united in marriage to Andrew Sture Hanson in Peterson, Iowa. To this union seven children were born. Rena and Andy farmed northwest of Ruthven where they raised their family. Rena was a devoted wife, mother, homemaker and farmwife.

Rena was very active on the farm and had a large garden each summer, canning and freezing her produce. Rena was a wonderful cook, made all types of jams and jellies and enjoyed crocheting. Rena loved the outdoors, especially camping and fishing. She was very proud of the fact that all seven of her children attended Lake Center School.

Rena was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ruthven.

Rena continued to live on her farm until September 2015 when she moved to the Ruthven Community Care Center. She passed away Friday, July 8, 2016 at the Ruthven Community Care Center, at the age of 107. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Andrew; children, Marjorie Schnell, Bertha Lenz and Audrey Anderson; one great-great grandchild; brothers, Raymond Whitford and Gene Whitford; and sisters, Lena Rosewall, Mable Smith and Edith Eggleston.

She is survived by her children, Beverly Herman of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Elleen Jakubowski of Capron, Illinois, Murray Hanson of Redlands, California and Glenn Hanson of Harvard, Illinois; twenty seven grandchildren; seventy two great grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; fifty four great-great grandchildren; eight step great-great grandchildren; one great-great-great grandchild; sister, Faye Beck of Peterson, Iowa; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
