Richard Samuel Dyer was born May 25, 1928 in rural Palo Alto County to Samuel and Anna (Olson) Dyer. He attended school in a country school in his early years. After two years of high school he began taking flying lessons in Emmetsburg and helping his father farm. Richard went to South Dakota where he worked as an electrical lineman. He then joined the U.S. Army in 1945 and served two years.
After his discharge he resumed his lessons and received his pilot's license. He moved to California where he flew commercial airliners for a few years. Then he moved to Hawaii where he flew for Mercer, Delta and DHL Airlines, until his retirement. He then moved back to Ayrshire, Iowa to help care for his father and to be closer to family.
During his flying career, Richard had the opportunity to fly several celebrities and actors from Los Angeles to their movie sites. Some of the individuals he flew were Howard Hughes, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Ann Margaret as well as many others. He also had the opportunity to appear on several T.V. shows such as the Bob Newhart Show and the Steve Allen Show.
Richard was a member of Federal Aviation Pilots, American Legion and National Aviators Association. He enjoyed traveling to Oshkosh, Wisconsin for the Experimental Aircraft Association Airshow and conventions each year.
Richard was a friendly, outgoing man who had a great passion for flying which took him through many years of happiness. He also loved taking pictures and videos of family events. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.
Richard passed away peacefully on January 11, 2016 surrounded by family at the Ruthven Community Care Center.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Helen Berger.
Left to cherish his memory is his sister, Genevieve Burger of Gillett Grove, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
