Roger Allen Krieg, son of Charles Casper and Elizabeth Lurene (Crawmer) Krieg, was born October 31, 1940 on the farm northeast of Mallard. He began school in Mallard in the first grade, as country schools shut down and the public schools had not yet implemented kindergarten programs. Roger graduated from Mallard High School in 1958.
In September 1958, Roger started mechanics school in Kansas City, Missouri, which was a nine month course. After completing his training he accepted a job with Norman Motors (Ford Garage) in Spirit Lake. Roger then worked as a mechanic for S & H Motors in Pocahontas.
On August 27, 1960 Roger was united in marriage to Shirley J. Hoben in Ruthven, Iowa. They were blessed with six children. After their marriage, Roger began working for Iowa Road Builders, a blacktop road surfacing company. Due to all of the traveling he decided to take a job with Waugh Oil Co, Phillips 66 Station in Spirit Lake. He then worked for Farlow Oil Company in Emmetsburg and while working there the opportunity came up for a position with U.P.S. washing trucks and running a shuttle to St. James, Minnesota each night.
Roger and Shirley lived in Emmetsburg for a while, before moving to George Geelan's farm east of Ruthven. In 1976 they decided to move into Ruthven. Roger was employed with U.P.S. for 35 years before retiring in 2002.
He was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven and was proud to be the first eucharistic minister at Sacred Heart. Roger also served as a councilman for the City of Ruthven.
Roger passed away Friday, December 10, 2021 at the Ruthven Community Care Center, at the age of 81. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lurene Krieg; his wife, Shirley; sisters, Vivian Krieg in infancy and Betty Guinn; a brother, Marvin Krieg; and a grandson, Lucas Krieg.
He is survived by his children, Sandi (Tom) Jones of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Terry (Vickie) Krieg of Spencer, Iowa, Michelle (John) Arp of Mason City, Iowa, Jim Krieg of Ayrshire, Iowa, Tony (Kari) Krieg of Ruthven, Iowa and Mark (Jennifer) Krieg of Spencer, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren; several great grandchildren; a sister, Karen Boeckholt of Gerber, California; a very dear friend, Devona Trimble of Ruthven, Iowa; as well as many other relatives and friends.
