Ron was born August 2, 1947 in Spencer, Iowa to Harley and Ruth (McMillin) Hanson of Ruthven, Iowa. He attended Ruthven High School, graduating in 1965. Shortly after graduation Ron enlisted in the United States Navy and served during the Vietnam War from 1965 – 1968. He received training as a Communications Yeoman and was then assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CVS-10). He was honorably discharged in June 1968 as a CYN3, with the rank of E-4 petty officer 3 rd class. After the war he returned home to Ruthven and married Nancy Rubel on May 17, 1969. Their union brought two children, son, Timothy John and daughter, Lori Ann who they raised on a farm Southeast of Ruthven.
For many years Ron worked for the Ruthven Elevator followed by the Ruthven Co-op where he was manager until his retirement in June 2014. An extremely hard worker, Ron was dedicated to his customers and employees and rarely, if ever, missed a day of work.
Ron married Joan (Berger) Terveer on January 13, 2007 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Together they made their home in Ruthven. They shared their love of auctions, SVU re-runs, nightly popcorn, Fox News, gambling, and spending time with their family. Joan taught Ron the fine art of mopping floors and he lovingly mopped Joan's Café nightly as they spent closing time together. Joan cared for Ron with love and patience until the day of his death.
Ron had the most wonderful laugh, robust and infectious! He had the greatest sense of humor and never met a stranger. Ron loved playing cards, fishing with friends in Canada, football, NASCAR, and a good cup of black coffee, especially when shared with his EMP cronies at Lakeland. Ron's sister Rita was a frequent guest of the EMP club on her many visits to Ruthven. Ron loved and was extremely proud of his son, Tim. He was a wonderful, loving grandpa to Sarah Jane and Adrien who adored him.
Ronald John Hanson died from complications of Alzheimer's disease August 31, 2019 while residing at the Community Memorial Health Center, Hartley, Iowa. Ron is survived by his loving wife, Joan of Ruthven, son Tim and Danette (Golden) Hanson, granddaughters Sarah Jane and Adrien, of Des Moines, Iowa, and sister, Rita (Hanson) Hovey of Urbandale, Iowa. He is also survived by step children, Dan and Heather Ruehle, and step granddaughters, Kayley and Aubrey, of Ruthven, Iowa, TJ and Lyndsey Terveer of Moville, Iowa, and Jake and Amy Manwarren of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. Ron is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and in-laws. He is preceded in death by his parents Harley and Ruth (McMillin) Hanson, wife Nancy (Rubel) Hanson, and daughter Lori Ann Hanson.
Ron was a proud member of the American Legion Post #33 Ruthven, Iowa. Please consider a memorial contribution to his beloved post in lieu of flowers.
A special thank you to Jake Schneider and Dan and Heather Ruehle for their care and support of Ron and Joan. They made it possible for Ron to remain safely at home for as long as possible. Ron's family would also like to extend a heart-felt thank you to the staff of the Community Memorial Health Center for their exemplary care.
