Shirley Lee Smith was born on October 18, 1927 in Ayrshire, the daughter of Ira and Josephine (Stephas) Bowman. She married C. Elmer Smith on October 17, 1946.

All her life Shirley called Ayrshire home, where she and her husband operated Elmer's Gyp Joint, a D-X and North Star service station, and where they raised their sons. Shirley loved the small community and oftentimes could be seen walking around town getting her exercise and visiting with anyone who had time to chat.

Surviving are her sons, Jody E. (Tricia) Smith of West Des Moines and Lynn J. (Kate) Smith of Grain Valley, MO; four grandsons, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Rex Allen, 7 brothers and 6 sisters.
