Thomas Joseph Vaughan, son of Stephen and Mary (Flynn) Vaughan, was born July 25, 1928, at the old Emmetsburg Hospital. He attended country school in Nevada Township near Mallard, Iowa.

On November 21, 1950, Tom was drafted into the United States Army, serving in the Korean War. During his service, Tom was awarded several medals, including one Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. He was honorably discharged on August 22, 1952.

After returning from service, Tom continued his farming career in Palo Alto County. Tom was a grain farmer and also raised livestock. He received the Master Pork Producer Award from the Iowa Pork Producers Association. Tom loved farming, especially when his grandkids were out with him and he liked checking on his pigs at "Pig Town".

On June 25, 1960, Tom was united in marriage to Frances Dreher at Assumption Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. To this union eight children were born. Tom and Frances raised their family on their farm near Mallard.

Tom was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mallard and Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Tom was also a devoted member of the V.F.W. Post #2295 in Emmetsburg, serving as past Commander for several terms. He was a member of the American Legion in Mallard and the Havelock AmVets.

Tom loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed visiting with his Army buddies, playing cards, watching the Military History Channel and FOX News. He was an avid reader and enjoyed having a cold Budweiser with family and friends.
