Vivian Ruth Gould, daughter of Walter R. and Eula (Miles) Smith, was born April 1, 1924 near Ruthven, Iowa. She attended country school near Ruthven and then Seneca Community School in Seneca, Iowa, where she graduated. Following high school, Vivian went to Greenville, Illinois where she attended college for one year and later attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.
On August 16, 1947 Vivian was united in marriage to Galen Gould in Swea City, Iowa. To this union three children were born. They made their home in Cherokee, Iowa and then moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1953. They returned to Iowa in 1954 and lived in Swea City until 1959 when they moved to Emmetsburg.
Vivian continued working on her Bachelors Degree, completing it at the age of 54 after many weekend, summer and night classes. She taught in the area and substitute taught at the Emmetsburg Catholic School.
She was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church and Church Circle. Vivian was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary in Emmetsburg. After her retirement, Vivian did a lot of volunteering at the Palo Alto County Hospital in many capacities. She was a great supporter of the hospital. She loved quilting and was a member of the quilters group in Emmetsburg.
Vivian enjoyed traveling, especially her trip to Ireland. She liked to travel to Oregon to visit her children and she was always the life of the party. She enjoyed being with young people and they in turn enjoyed being with Vivian. She was truly "young at heart".
Vivian passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg, Iowa at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Galen; a son, Roger Gould; a grandson, Troy Gould; sisters, Mary Jean Smith and Marjorie Smith Heinselman; and brothers, Walter Smith, Jr., Richard Smith and Art Smith.
She is survived by her children, Don Gould of Woodburn, Oregon and Jan Gould of Portland, Oregon; daughter-in-law, Cindy Gould of Ames, Iowa; two grandchildren, Shawn (Kristin) Gould of Eureka, California and Brian (Julie) Gould of Ames, Iowa; five great grandchildren, Brittany and Alexandria Durst, Vivian, Burton and Violet Gould; one great-great granddaughter, Ila Durst; brothers, Jim (Betty) Smith of Swea City, Iowa, Luverne (Judy) Smith of Swea City, Iowa and Harley Smith of Tahlequah, Oklahoma; as well as many other relatives and friends.
