Wladyslaw Kapustynski was born in Poland in 1921. In 1939, at the age of 15, Wady's life took a dramatic turn, along with almost everyone else in Europe. German Gestapo agents arrived at Wady's farm home and instructed Wady to report to the train station by the end of the week for induction into a German labor camp. Wady left behind his parents and his younger brother and sister. Wady was taken to Austria and never heard from his family again.
After a couple of years in the camp, Wady had the opportunity to train with a tailor for the next three years. By the end of the war Wady was proficient in three languages and worked as an interpreter for a Russian army captain. It was during this time he met the love of his life and the lady he would marry. He and Maria both worked for the American Red Cross sewing snow suits for children. They were married on April 12, 1945 in Vienna, Austria.
Unable to return to their native countries they registered to be sponsored by someone in the United States. McNally's Dry Cleaning agreed to sponsor Wady and Maria and have Wady work in the dry cleaning business. While waiting to make the journey to the United States, they were blessed with their first child, Peter. After being captured and jailed in Graz, Wady, Maria and their baby headed to America in 1949, landing at Ellis Island after twelve days on the ship.
Wady's talents as a tailor made him decide to begin his own business after working at McNally's Dry Cleaning for nearly a year. He and Maria had a lucrative business and Wady taught tailoring throughout the state. They continued their tailoring business for 50 years. Throughout these years they had three more sons, two who died in infancy and Paul.
One of Wady's proudest moments of his life came in 1955 when he had the great honor of becoming an American citizen and never once from that point on did he ever take that privilege for granted. Another gift was to spend over 60 years with his beloved Maria, caring for her until her death in 2006.
Wady passed away Monday, October 26, 2015 at the Emmetsburg Care Center at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother; two infant sons; and his wife, Maria.
He is survived by his sons, Pete of Emmetsburg, Iowa and Paul (Jackie) of Mason City, Iowa; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren; and countless friends.
